The program works collaboratively with trained professionals to ensure a comprehensive quality of service to the community. SMART has compassionate, masters-level counselors who have years of experience in the field. Laura Ladin, LCPC. A licensed professional counselor, Laura obtained her master's degree in psychology from Towson State University. She has nine years of professional experience. Her work history includes home-based services, work with inner-city youth and play therapy. Laura is client centered in her approach and believes that building relationships is the key to effective practice. She is particularly interested in working with teenaged girls and clients who struggle with depression and PTSD. Holly Hathaway, LCSW, graduated from the University of Vermont with a masters degree in social work. She has eleven years of professional experience, including medical social work, intensive home-based services and early childhood. Her approach to therapy incorporates the ecological systems perspective, strengths perspective and is client-centered. Matthew Lombard, LCSW, graduated from Boston College with a Master’s in Social Work. Matt has experience working with individuals of different ages in a variety of clinical settings. Since graduation Matt has worked with children through an intensive in-home program in York County as well as with adults and families in an outpatient setting. Matt takes a cognitive-behavioral approach to supporting clients and also has training in Dialectic Behavioral Training (DBT) with adults. Matt takes an ecological systems approach, that is strength based and client centered. Nolan Thompson, LCSW has recently joined SMART's Counseling Program. Nolan graduated from Washington University with a Master's in Social Work, and has completed courses at Boston College's Doctoral Program in Social Work. He earned his LCSW in April 1993 and moved back to Portland in 1995 after a two year counseling stint at Bowdoin College. His principal focus is the whole person and he generally using a Gestaltist framework. Ideally his practice is about helping clients come to know what they want and what inhibits them from getting it.
