SMART Child and Family Services is proud of its grassroots beginnings.
Originally named Southern Maine Alternative to Residential Treatment, the therapeutic foster care program was created by six foster parents who believed in the importance of modeling healthy family life and supporting the functioning of foster families as the primary means of treatment. For two years these foster parents put in long, uncompensated hours to create a therapeutic foster care agency that would provide consistent, ongoing support for its professional foster parents. The agency placed its first child in August of 1995. The original office was located in a foster parents’ home, then a small location in Windham, and eventually moved to and purchased its current Windham parent location in 1996. SMART’s foster homes are located across Southern Maine and we serve children from all over the state.
In direct response to the ever-growing need for mental health services in the Lakes Region area, SMART expanded its services in late 2004 with the addition of SMART Mental Health Services. This program is staffed by licensed master’s level clinicians, and offers a variety of modalities to help children, adults, and families manage their individual needs and situations. As part of the counseling services, the Home and Community Treatment Program (HCT) was added, serving families with children who are experiencing mental health and/or behavioral challenges this program provides support, advocacy, and coordination of services within the home and community. SMART has continued its expansion with the addition of Adult and Children’s Case Management (Community Integration and Targeted Case Management) and Substance Abuse Services including DEEP Evaluations, Intensive Outpatient Counseling (IOP), Outpatient Counseling, and Substance Abuse Assessments. SMART has also added Outpatient Psychiatry Services for clients to be able to access all of their mental health needs in one community-centered location.
SMART is excited to extend the relationship-focused community mental health services we provide to serve the communities surrounding our office at 180 Main Street in Biddeford and our new office at 27 Ocean Street in South Portland.
